Lakers vs Celtics

Preview: Los Angeles Lakers at Boston Celtics Game #42

The Celtics and Lakers renew one of the most storied rivalries in NBA history. These two teams have met 12 times in the Finals: first in 1959 and last in 2010. The Celtics have won 17 championships while the Lakers have won 16 championships, 11 in Los Angeles and 5 in Minneapolis. The Celtics last title in 2008 came against the Lakers and the Lakers last title in 2010 was over the Celtics.

The Celtics have dropped to 4th in the East, half a game behind Toronto and 1.5 games behind Miami. They are also just half a game ahead of Philadelphia in 6th. They are 16-5 at home and 4-6 in their last 10 games and have lost their last 3 games. They are in the middle of a 3 game home stand. They are 8-5 against Western Conference teams.

The Lakers are first in the West and behind just the Bucks in the whole NBA. They are 4.5 games ahead of 2nd place Denver. They are 18-3 on the road and won their last game after a loss in the previous game but they have won 10 out of their last 11 games. This is the 2nd of a 5 game road trip that will take them through the Knicks, Nets and Sixers after this one. They are 11-4 vs Eastern Conference teams.

The last game between these two teams was in Boston in February of 2019. The Celtics lost that game as LeBron James had a triple double and Rajon Rondo hit the game winner at the buzzer to give the Lakers the win. The Celtics avenged that loss on March 9 when they beat the Lakers at the Staples Center 120-107. This is the first of 2 games between them this season. They will meet again in LA on February 23.

Jaylen Brown has missed the last 2 games with a sprained thumb. His MRI came back clear of serious injury and he is listed as questionable for this game. Kemba Walker missed the last game with knee soreness. His MRI also came back clear of structural damage. It appears that both Kemba and Jaylen will be playing in this game. Robert Williams remains out with a hip injury.

The Lakers are also dealing with some injuries. DeMarcus Cousins is out with a torn ACL and is not expected back until possibly the playoffs. Anthony Davis landed hard on his back and has missed the last 5 games. He did not participate in the Lakers’ Sunday workout but he is not on the morning injury list and so will likely play. Rajon Rondo has missed the last 3 games with a finger injury and is still listed as questionable. He will be a game time decision. Knowing Rondo, if he can possibly play against his old team, he will.

  • LeBron James Photo by Bob Levey/Getty Images

Gordon Hayward vs LeBron James
LeBron is definitely a key matchup. He is averaging 25.5 points, 7.7 rebounds, and 10.9 assists per game. He is shooting 49.2% from the field and 34.4% from beyond the arc. LeBron is the focal point of their offense and is next to impossible to stop. We will likely see Marcus Smart and maybe Semi Ojeleye along with Hayward trying to slow him down.

  • Jayson Tatum Photo by Adam Glanzman/Getty Images
  • Anthony Davis Photo by Sean M. Haffey/Getty Images

Jayson Tatum vs Anthony Davis
With the expectation that Davis will return from his injury for this game, Jayson Tatum’s job just got a lot tougher. Davis is averaging 27.1 points, 9.4 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 2.6 blocks per game. He is shooting 50.4% from the field and 29.7% from beyond the arc. As with LeBron, it will likely take more than one person to slow him down. Hopefully he will be a step slow coming back from the injury, but I wouldn’t count on it. Jayson absolutely must be at his best defensively to keep Davis from having a huge game.

Honorable Mention

Celtics Centers vs Lakers Centers The Lakers have two big and imposing centers in JaVale McGee and Dwight Howard. Both are playing very well this season. JaVale McGee is averaging 7.1 points, 5.9 rebounds, and 1.7 blocks. He is shooting 64.2% from the field and 66.7% from beyond the arc. Howard is averaging 7.6 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 1.5 blocks per game. He is shooting 72% from the field and 60% from beyond the arc. Theis and Kanter have to try to keep them out of the paint if at all possible and they also have to guard them all the way out to the 3 point line.

Keys to the Game
Defense – Defense wins games. The Celtics are 5th in the league with a defensive rating of 105.6. The Lakers 3rd with a defensive rating of 104.7. Over their last 10 games, the Celtics have let their defense slip and they rank just 14th in defensive rating over those games. The Celtics need to get back to making defense a priority. The Lakers will bring their defense and so the Celtics have to match their defensive intensity.

Rebound – Rebounding takes effort and energy and the Celtics will need both to out-rebound the Lakers. They need to crash the boards and keep the Lakers from getting second chance points and fast breaks. The Celtics are averaging 45.6 rebounds per game while the Lakers are averaging 45.8 rebounds per game. The Lakers are 2nd in points in the paint with 53.7 per game and 4th with 14.6 second chance points per game. The Celtics have to crash the boards to limit their put backs and second chance baskets.

Be Aggressive – The Celtics must be the more aggressive team. They have to be aggressive in going to the basket, in diving for loose balls, and on defense. They have to aggressively crash the boards. They have to be the team that wants it more. Over their 3 game losing streak, they have allowed their opponents to play harder and be more aggressive. They absolutely can’t let the Lakers be more aggressive than them if they want to have a chance to win.

Take Care of the Ball – The Celtics need to share the ball and make the extra pass to find the best shot possible. When they over dribble and don’t play team ball, they never play very well. They have to move the ball. But, they also must take care of the ball because the Lakers are 2nd in fast break points with 18.0 points per game. If the Celtics get sloppy and turn the ball over, the Lakers will certainly make them pay.

Start Strong and Finish Strong – The Celtics have been coming out slow and getting down by double digits in the first quarter and although they seem to focus and play harder later in the game, they have struggled to get back in the game after the slow starts. They absolutely have to come out ready to play right from the opening tip. And then, they have to play hard right up until the final buzzer. They need consistent effort, especially against a team as good as the Lakers.

Home Court – The Celtics are home with the Garden crowd behind them. They should get a lift from the crowd and from playing on the familiar parquet floor. Hopefully the Garden faithful will be loud and rattle the Lakers enough for the Celtics to have the advantage.

Celtic Pride – “Beat LA” is one of the most iconic chants in sports. This is a storied rivalry and no matter the circumstances, the Celtics always want to beat the Lakers. The Celtics have to focus on the game and on playing the right way. It’s a matter of pride and the Celtics need to get the job done and “Beat LA”.

Officiating – The officiating is always an x-factor. Every crew calls the game differently and the Celtics have to adapt to how the game is being called and not allow bad calls and no calls to take away their focus. If you doubt that officiating is an x-factor, just think back to the last Finals between these two teams. In game 7, the Celtics were up 6 going into the 4th quarter. The refs had called the game evenly up until then. But in the 4th quarter, the referees took over and it cost the Celtics that game. The Lakers took 21 free throws in the 4th quarter alone while the Celtics took 6. The Lakers took more free throws in the 4th quarter than they did in the first 3 quarters combined. Hopefully they call it fair in this game and let both teams play.

BAD REF ALERT:Tony Brothers brings angst to every team’s fan base and he is the lead ref for this game. He was voted the worst ref in the league by 24.5% of the players in their recent survey. With Brothers, you never know what you will get. Sometimes he calls everything on both teams. Sometimes he lets both teams play. And, sometimes he calls a game one sided for one of the teams. Basically, he is just bad. Hopefully we get the Tony Brothers that lets them play both ways in this game. Usually when fans of any team sees Brothers calling their games, they cringe.

Hawaii Shooting

Suspect in Hawaii Officers’ Deaths Described as Unhinged – NBC 6 South Florida

A Hawaii handyman with a history of run-ins with police and neighbors faced eviction when he stabbed a woman and killed two officers before the house he and two women were believed to be inside burned, authorities and neighbors said.

Police responding Sunday to a call for help at the location found a woman stabbed in the leg and resident Jaroslav “Jerry” Hanel, began shooting, killing Officers Tiffany Enriquez, a seven-year veteran, and Kaulike Kalama, a nine-year veteran, Honolulu Police Chief Susan Ballard said.

Police suspect Hanel, who was in his 60s, and two women who have not been identified were inside the house when it caught fire. They were presumed dead and Ballard said it could take days to recover the remains and process evidence.

The fire destroyed seven homes and left others damaged. As it raged, the sound of dozens of apparent gunshots rang out.

Ballard said no other officers were injured but authorities were investigating whether ammunition, incendiary devices or explosives contributed to the intensity of the blaze. The apparent gunfire prompted authorities to initially prevent firefighters from approaching.

Sgt. Malcolm Lutu, president of Hawaii’s statewide police union, said he does not have any concerns about the approach police took in dealing with the situation.

“They had past dealings with him where no violence was present,” Lutu said. “Where the shots came from, they were in a no-win situation.”

Lutu said he knew one of the two officers personally. He said Officer Tiffany Enriquez, 37, was a single mother of three daughters and had one grandchild.

The homeowner, Lois Cain, had recently sought to evict Hanel, who lived in the home for free in exchange for his work, according to court records and his lawyer.

Hanel’s lawyer, Jonathan Burge, said Monday Cain’s sister contacted him because Cain was unaccounted for. “She was trying to see whatever information we had because they can’t reach Lois,” Burge said. The sister told him she spoke with the woman who was stabbed, who was one of the tenants of the house, he said.

The normally peaceful neighborhood is at the far end of famed Waikiki Beach.

Ian Felix, a Honolulu resident and combat veteran with medical training, said he was walking by the home when he saw a woman lying on the ground with blood coming from her leg.

Felix put a tourniquet on the woman’s leg until the first police officer arrived. Two more officers arrived moments later; Felix said he then heard two gunshots and that he and the officer carried the injured woman into a neighbor’s garage.

Neighbors described Hanel as mentally disturbed and Ballard said he did not have any gun permits.

Hawaii has some of the toughest gun laws in the U.S. Residents can’t buy firearms without permits approved by local police, who check databases to make sure applicants have not been convicted of felonies or misdemeanor crimes.

People are also denied permits if they have been acquitted of crimes because of mental problems or have been diagnosed with significant mental, behavioral or emotional disorders.

Burge has represented Hanel since 2015 in various disputes with neighbors, including temporary restraining orders that three obtained against him. Hanel, a native of the Czech Republic who used Czech interpreters in court, faced a hearing next week on a charge of misusing 911 services, Burge said Sunday.

Burge said he never knew Hanel to be violent, but that “he’s kind of a quirky guy and had problems.” Hanel believed the government was watching him and tapping his phone, Burge said.

Cain was supportive of him in his disputes with neighbors, Burge said, but she wanted him to move out so she could move into the home. Burge said their relationship also soured because Hanel’s dog had died and Cain wouldn’t let him get a new one, and the eviction might have set Hanel off.

In the complaint for Hanel’s eviction, Cain said Hanel did not have a rental agreement and that despite repeated demands, he refused to vacate the premises.

Attorney David Hayakawa has represented three neighbors in restraining orders against Hanel since 2014. The neighbors complained of bizarre and annoying behavior including Hanel chasing cars down the street, confronting their guests and workers who came to their homes, recording them with a GoPro camera mounted to his hat and rigging a barbecue grill to blow thick smoke directly into their windows, Hayakawa said Monday. “Just crazy things,” he said. “It was pretty clear he was out of control.”

He would hide in bushes and watch people and he yelled at tourists who were lost while trying to get to Diamond Head, Hayakawa said.

“He was kind of in his own mind, block security,” Hayakawa said. When a woman who lived in the area would walk her dog or jog past Hanel’s home, “he focused on her and would take her picture,” Hayakawa said.

A judge sided with his clients “every step of the way,” Hayakawa said. “The court granted our motions, listened to us and ruled properly. But there’s only so much a piece of paper can do.”

The homes of two of Hayakawa’s clients were gutted in the fire. He recalled one client telling him Sunday, “nothing that happened to me is anything compared to what happened to these police officer’s families. But when your house is gone and all your possessions, I don’t know how to describe that.”

Chandler Parsons

Chandler Parsons Snags Second L.A. Home – Variety

December 27, 2019 11:49AM PT

Injury plagued NBA star Chandler Parsons — the six-foot-ten small forward who sought experimental treatments in Europe after three knee surgeries in as many years and is currently signed to the Atlanta Hawks on an expiring one-year contract valued at $25.1 million — has clearly got a hardcore thing for high-end homes in Los Angeles.

In October, the 31-year-old pro basketballer turned a tidy profit on the $12.35 million sale of a nearly 12,000-square-foot mansion in Bel Air’s swank Stone Canyon area that he’d acquired just over two years earlier for $10.9 million. He soon paid “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation” creator Anthony Zuiker $9.25 million for a tropically landscaped Zen-modern estate in Malibu and recently recorded tax records show he’s plunked down another $6.775 million for a brand-spanking-new ultra-contemporary jaw dropper perched almost as high above the Sunset Strip as it gets.

Masterfully crafted with superior materials and a hefty dose of engineering derring-do, the audaciously cantilevered residence was designed by New York City architecture firm Fu Wilmers Design and occupies an elevated, street-to-street parcel with staggering, 270-degree mountain, ocean and city views. Arranged over three floors, equipped with a cutting-edge home automation system and designed for easy-breezy indoor/outdoor living and entertaining, there are five bedrooms and five full and two half bathrooms in just over 5,500 square feet.

Located on the light-filled middle level, the combination living/dining space is anchored at one end by an austere fireplace set into an extruded volume sheathed in the same seal-grey stone tiles as laid on the floor. The airy space wraps around to a long, slender and rigorously minimalist kitchen pleasantly warmed up by full-height wood cabinets along the back wall. Massive, eleven-foot tall glass panels in both areas effortlessly glide open at the touch of a button to blur any distinction between indoors and outdoors.

A main floor bedroom/office opens to an al fresco lounge nipped under the cantilevered section of the upper floor, where the master bedroom was cleverly configured with two walls of glass that, when open at night, transform the room into an ethereal, open-air sleeping porch that floats atop a glittering carpet of lights. A glass floor beneath a muscular, open-tread steel and glass staircase might prove revealing for some skirt wearers but does effectively bring natural light into a sprawling and surprisingly high-ceilinged lower level that offers a climate-controlled walk-in wine cabinet and tasting area, a spacious lounge/bar, a fitness room and a plush, 12-seat theater with state-of-the-art sound system. Also accessible from this level is a three-car garage.

The master suite makes private use of a glass-railed balcony as well as a planted roof deck; the al fresco lounge on the main floor under the cantilevered section wraps around the back of the house and includes an outdoor kitchen and grilling area; and, just outside the kitchen and living room but a handful of steps down, a zero-edge swimming pool and spa were adroitly placed to take maximum advantage of the extraordinary views over the city.

The listing was held by Jacob Greene of The Altman Brothers Team at Douglas Elliman, while Parsons was repped by Jamison Malone of The Agency.

What to Know About the Virginia Gun Rally

U.S.|What to Know About the Virginia Gun Rally

The governor declared a state of emergency and the F.B.I. has made several arrests. Here’s what you need to know ahead of Monday’s rally.

Stacks of chain-link fencing and a tower with security cameras lie beside the equestrian statue of George Washington outside the State Capitol in Richmond, Va., Tuesday, in anticipation of large crowds Monday, for Lobby Day.Stacks of chain-link fencing and a tower with security cameras lie beside the equestrian statue of George Washington outside the State Capitol in Richmond, Va., Tuesday, in anticipation of large crowds Monday, for Lobby Day.Credit…Bob Brown/Richmond Times-Dispatch, via Associated Press

Thousands of activists from across the country are expected to descend on the Virginia State Capitol on Monday to rally against sweeping new gun control proposals supported by state Democrats.

But the rally in Richmond — billed as a peaceful event to lobby lawmakers to defend Second Amendment rights — has quickly set off fears of potential violence and chaos. Discussions about the rally have been lighting up online platforms frequented by anti-government militia groups and white supremacists for weeks, and various extremist groups have vowed to attend.

Tensions escalated this week when Gov. Ralph Northam declared a state of emergency and temporarily banned weapons on Capitol grounds, citing credible “threats of violence.” The F.B.I. also announced the arrest of three suspected neo-Nazis who the authorities said had obtained weapons and discussed participating in the Richmond event, intensifying concerns.

Here’s what you need to know about the rally and what to expect for Monday.

Why is the rally happening now?

Virginia Democrats flipped the state House and Senate in November, wresting the General Assembly from Republican control in a state that was once the seat of the Confederacy.

Under Mr. Northam, a Democrat who survived a scandal over a racist photograph last year, state Democrats planned to make gun control a priority in the 2020 session. But the plan sparked a backlash in a state with a strong history of supporting gun rights.

After 12 people were killed in a mass shooting in Virginia Beach last year, a special legislative session to consider gun control lasted just 90 minutes. In recent weeks, more than 100 municipalities have designated themselves “sanctuaries” for the Second Amendment. Though the measures are purely symbolic, lawmakers and sheriffs in those areas have said they will refuse to enforce new gun control laws.

What are the proposed Virginia gun laws?

The Virginia State Senate has approved three gun control bills that could be approved by the House of Delegates as early as next week.

The measures limit purchases of handguns to one each month; require that gun buyers submit to background checks; and allow local governments to ban guns in parks and public buildings. Mr. Northam has said he would sign each of the bills.

Democrats who won control of the General Assembly, in part for their support of imposing strict firearms restrictions, say more gun control legislation is on the way, including a red flag law that would permit officials to confiscate firearms from people deemed dangerous to themselves or others. They also say they want to ban assault-style weapons, but that effort has been delayed in both chambers.

Who is expected to attend the rally?

The rally is being hosted by the Virginia Citizens Defense League, a prominent Second Amendment group that typically holds an annual “Lobby Day” to meet with lawmakers. The group is organizing charter buses, car pools and a sushi dinner the night before the rally in anticipation of what it is calling “the most important Lobby Day Rally that we have ever had.”

The group’s president Philip Van Cleave, who refers to himself as an extremist, issued a statement saying that the rally was meant to be a peaceful protest “about gun rights and nothing else.”

In a state where hunting is a popular sport and gun ownership is common in rural areas, most in attendance are expected to be gun rights supporters. Still, the rally has drawn the attention of militia groups from as far away as Nevada and Oklahoma, including those tracked by the Southern Poverty Law Center and the Anti-Defamation League.

Others vowing to attend include individuals associated with the Light Foot Militia, some of whom were banned from Charlottesville after the “Unite the Right” rally in 2017, which ended in the death of a counterprotester. Richard B. Spencer, a prominent white nationalist who is among 24 defendants in a lawsuit over the rally in Charlottesville, also said he might attend.

Experts on extremism believe the groups want to co-opt the rally in an effort to fuel a race war. For example, extremists are calling Monday’s rally the “boogaloo,” which in the language of white supremacists is an event that will accelerate such a war.

It remains unclear who will actually arrive in Richmond, but it’s possible pre-emptive moves by the authorities could deter some who had vowed to attend.

What is the Base?

The authorities on Thursday announced the arrests of three men linked to the Base, an extremist group being tracked by the F.B.I. The three men had obtained weapons and discussed participating in the Richmond rally and were charged with various federal crimes in Maryland, the authorities said.

On Friday, law enforcement announced the arrest of at least four other men also tied to the Base, in separate plots. In Georgia, three men, who are members of the group, were arrested and charged for a conspiracy to murder a married couple in Bartow County, the authorities said.

In Wisconsin, another member of the Base was arrested on charges of vandalizing a synagogue in Racine, Wis., according to court documents.

The Base is a white extremist, antigovernment group that aims to establish a white “ethno-state.”

The F.B.I. has grown increasingly concerned about the Base as it has worked to recruit more people. The group encourages the onset of anarchy, according to the Counter Extremism Project, an organization that tracks far-right extremists. Experts say that its founder, an American, appears to be living in Russia.

Former law enforcement officials say the Base and a similar group known as Atomwaffen have become priorities for the F.B.I.

In November, the F.B.I. arrested Richard Tobin, a young man in New Jersey, who was accused of recruiting on behalf of the Base and of supporting violence, including the killing of black people with a machete.

How long will the state of emergency last?

Mr. Northam declared a state of emergency ahead of Monday’s rally, temporarily banning weapons, including firearms, from the grounds of the State Capitol in a move that the Virginia Citizens Defense League tried to fight in court.

The Virginia Supreme Court upheld the temporary ban.

In his declaration, Mr. Northam cited the eruption in Charlottesville three years ago as an example of “what can happen when peaceful demonstrations are hijacked by those who come into the Commonwealth and do not value the importance of peaceful assembly.” He added: “We must take all precautions to prevent that from ever happening again.”

The state of emergency is scheduled to begin Friday at 5 p.m. and extend through Tuesday.

Timothy Williams, Neil MacFarquhar and Adam Goldman contributed reporting.
